SECONDARY HISTORY

Oct 1993: First tournament is played with just 4 players at Papakura. The trophy is built from a stolen tee marker and nearby fence post

Dec 1993: A keg of beer is taken around the public course at the Takapuna, Auckland tournament

Mar 1994: The first overseas tournament (Waiheke Island) is also the site of the first Caber toss

Jul 1994: Boisterous post-tournament celebrations lead to the first death threats being received from Whitianga townsfolk towards one of the players who had enrolled in a pub game show.

Oct 1994: The first genuine golf handicapper (JK- handicap 19) contests at the now extinct Pukengahu course in Taranaki. Even though it is a strokeplay tournament, he fails to win.

Nov 1994: After 13 tournaments it is decided to reduce the frequency from monthly to three-monthly

Jan 1995: K Judd wins the first and only stableford tournament of the 20th century era at Waitara

Apr 1995: In what is now seen as a seriously misguided decision, this tournament was played on a home computer due to torrential rain deterring outdoor play, and the relative novelty of computer games at the time. The household wife demands to be included and finishes a close second to B Judd – the computer game’s owner

Apr 1995: Women are banned from competing

Jun 1995: The first knock-out tournament is played with A Vesty being the winner. There is no record of who else competed

Oct 1995: Players cease participation and go their separate ways

Apr 2000: After a four and a half year hiatus, the Thirsty cup resumes with 6 participants at Strathmore. Tournaments are 3 monthly?

Aug 2000: Stableford scoring is permanently introduced. C Tempero wins with 29 points and an off-the-stick score of 120 at Pirongia. It is also the first recognised DNF after C Murray fails to stand up after 12 holes. He is left lying on the green with other people having to putt around him

Oct 2000: An all time low turnout of three players appear at Mangakino. They are later invited to a local wedding to enable the publican to shut the town’s only pub.

Jun 2001 To facilitate more drinking, Alan decides that from all tournaments hereafter players are to partner up and complete each others penalty drinks as well as their own. D Fuller earns a record 64 marmites and a port

Sep 2001: Contestants are interrupted by an angry publican in the middle of matchplay demanding accountability for damage caused during pre-tournament celebrations the night before. Police are called and they are forced to relocate to another town for post-tournament celebrations.

Sep 2002 The first time a winner is declared by way of rule 17; scoring a hole-in-one. C Tempero accomplished it on the 100m 17th at Te Poi, despite earlier having a spew.

Another contestant goes to bed early and wakes up later to find a load of strangers staring at him. His bed had been carried to the Te Poi pub public bar while he was asleep in it

May 2003 A record 9 contestants turn out at Stewart Alexander course in Te Awamutu. It also holds the record for the highest number of drinks per person with an average of 49.33. Ten vomits are recorded on the official scorecard. The last hole is completed in near darkness

Nov 2003 The 10th anniversary features a knock-out tournament and a quiz show based on “Who wants to be a millionaire” called “Who wants to be ill on beer”

Aug 2004: Thirstycup.com is launched. By years end it has received over 11 hits

Nov 2004: A record 21 contestants compete for the 31st Thirsty Cup edition in Raglan. D Fuller, a 1500 to 1 outsider wins on the final hole against someone who has never played golf before

May 2006: There is controversy when a contestant DNFs and is left on the Waitomo golf course. He wakes up alone under a tree later that night while the other contestants are in a pub watching rugby over 6km away

Mid 2007? To facilitate more drinking, Alan decides all players must consume a bottle on the first nine holes, in his words “to speed the game up”

May 2009 The first recorded dual DNF occurs at Matamata

Mid 2013 A contestant disappears during the Awhitu tournament and is unable to be found despite the nearest town being 30 minutes drive away.

Mar 2014 To facilitate more drinking, Alan demands a two day 36 hole tournament. It is held in Mangatainoka but players are forced to leave after 27 holes after the course is deemed too busy. With some relief, players relocate to the local brewery

May 2015 The closed Mokau golf course is temporarily restored by contestants for the 46th Thirsty Cup edition. It is a 12 hole tournament played in costumes. Dickie DNFs after injuring himself fetching more beer on a motorbike

Jul 2016 A tournament at Te Awamutu is held at night featuring glow-in-the-dark balls. The police interfere when investigating but are politely moved on by contestants

Feb 2017 A local club member at Kawhia, after observing Kelvin, describes him as a spastic

Nov 2018 A field of 17 arrives for the 25th anniversary tournament and associated celebrations. This includes the unveiling of a new trophy with a pyrotechnic display and the premiere of the Thirsty Cup documentary “Fairways of Sick”

Sept 2022 Some locals at Whangamata become agitated after multiple unconscious people are left lying on their public golf course

Apr 2025 Russell sadly passes away. A drink of remembrance is now held for him at the beginning of each tournament
